How to Add a Domain to Valimail Monitor

Applies to: Valimail Monitor (Free) accounts

Adding a domain to Monitor takes a minute. You enter the domain on the Domains page, then point its DMARC record to Valimail so Monitor can start showing you who sends email on your behalf. This article covers both steps, what to expect afterward, and the limits that apply to free accounts.

Add a domain

  1. In the left menu, click Domains. This opens the Domains List, which shows every domain on your account.

  2. Click + Add Domain in the top right.

  3. Type the domain, for example: domain.com. Leave out https://, www., and any email address.

  4. Click Add.

Adding the domain only registers it in Monitor. It doesn't show any data yet. To see who sends email using your domain, update the domain's DMARC record so receiving mail servers send their aggregate (RUA) reports to Valimail. For instructions on pointing the DMARC record to Valimail, see this article.

Limitations

Free Monitor accounts have two rules for adding domains.

1. Domain ownership is verified through user email. You can only add a domain that matches the email domain of a verified user on your account. If [email protected] is a user, she can add acme-corp.com. She can't add acme-corp.net or a client's domain. If the domain doesn't match, Monitor shows this error and doesn't add it:

Domains must match an email address belonging to a user on this account.

This check keeps people from adding domains they don't control. Paid accounts have more ways to verify ownership, and Valimail for MSPs covers managing domains for multiple clients.

2. Add organizational (parent) domains only. Enter the main domain, such as acme-corp.com. Subdomains such as mail.acme-corp.com cannot be added from the DOMAINS page.

If either limit gets in your way, click "Upgrade Now" in the side menu to compare plans. If you manage domains for clients, contact us to learn about the Valimail MSP Partner program.
