How to set up email authentication for Virtuous

Updated over 5 months ago
Supports SPF alignment: Yes (dedicated subdomain)
Supports DKIM alignment: Yes

DMARC requires the domain in the “From” address of the email (what the recipient sees) to match the information authenticated by SPF or DKIM. This is called DMARC alignment.

Certain email service providers require bulk email-sending domains to authenticate their emails with both SPF and DKIM, in addition to configuring one of these authentication methods for DMARC alignment. You can read more about these bulk sender requirements here.

  6. OPTIONAL: Use Branded Links. Link branding rewrites all of your tracking links to use the domain you choose, which can further improve email deliverability.

  7. Enter Your Domain.

  8. Go to Advanced Settings.

  9. Select the following:

  • 'Use Custom Return Path'

  • 'Use Custom DKIM Selector': Choose a custom selector like 'vrt' or'v1'.

  • 'Use Automated Security'

If you are an Enforce or Align user and your domain's SPF and/or DKIM records are pointed to Valimail, follow the steps below to add these records to the domain configuration in Valimail. The two CNAME records that contain '_domainkey' in their Hostname need to be published in Valimail, and the rest of the CNAME records in your external DNS zone.

Add Virtuous to the SPF configuration in Valimail

Once you establish that Virtuous is an authorized sender for your domain, you will need to configure the service as an Enabled Sender in your domain's configuration.

You will find more detailed information on how to add a service for your domain in Valimail, here:

After the DKIM keys are published in Valimail, and the other records in the external DNS, go back to the Virtuous page where you got the records from and press the Verify button in the lower right of the modal.
